Bell & Evans culture of health extends to employees, community and raising the chickens

Company partners with Capital BlueCross

HARRISBURG, Pa. (Aug. 22, 2012) – When Bell & Evans hosts its annual golf outing on Friday, Aug. 24 at Iron Valley Golf Club in Lebanon, Pa., the focus won’t be on making par, it will be on raising a projected $100,000 to support Lebanon’s Good Samaritan Hospital Cancer Care Services. In only its fourth year, the golf event has already raised more than $131,000 for the cause and is gaining in popularity. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. and will feature 136 golfers.

Also gaining in popularity is the company’s culture of health that includes the community, its employees and yes, raising chickens. A strong partnership with Capital BlueCross has helped Bell & Evans of Fredericksburg, Pa. implement a highly successful wellness program for its employees. This initiative includes consulting with a Capital BlueCross nutritionist on offering healthy cafeteria food choices, on-site smoking cessation programs, development of a wellness committee, creation of a monthly wellness calendar, and use of employee health surveys to drive wellness programs. All of this is on top of existing initiatives that feature an on-site health care clinic for employees, with a $0 copay.

“This company is the ideal role model for every health-conscious business to emulate,” said Gary D. St. Hilaire, president & CEO of Capital BlueCross. “Employees, the community and consumers are all healthier because of the way Bell & Evans operates its business.”

“Our inherent drive to set the example as a company focused on health, coupled with our strong partnership with Capital BlueCross, has allowed Bell & Evans to show that we do more than just raise and process chickens,” said Scott Sechler, president of Bell & Evans. “We are reaching deep into the community and helping to make it a healthier place to live, like through our relationship with Good Samaritan Hospital. That’s something we are all proud of.”

Most companies are content to focus on their employees and the community they serve. Bell & Evans takes their mission one step further and extends their health consciousness to the product they are known internationally for – the chickens. Bell & Evans chickens are fed an all-vegetarian diet and NEVER given antibiotics or hormones. They are handled humanely from the farm, to transport, to the processing plant. The company’s implementation of Slow Induction Anesthesia, a low-stress, pain and suffer-free approach to processing, has earned Bell & Evans accolades from national animal rights groups.

This unique approach to raising chickens has bolstered business for Bell & Evans, to the point where they provide the chickens of choice for a number of national restaurants, independent meat markets and upscale food shops.

Bell & Evans has been family-owned and operated since the 1890s. The company processes about 850,000 birds a week and distributes their raised-without-antibiotics and organic chickens nationwide. Bell & Evans products can be found in the finest restaurants, premium butcher shops, natural food stores and hand-picked supermarkets. More information about Bell & Evans can be found by going to
