Olympic Gold Medalist Diann Roffe talks with children of employees at Capital BlueCross

Company hosts a Healthy University for kids visiting their parents at work

HARRISBURG, Pa. (Aug. 8, 2012) – Olympic gold medal winner Diann Roffe will talk about living a healthy lifestyle with more than 100 children whose parents work at Capital BlueCross during a special program on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012 at the Elmerton Avenue headquarters building in Harrisburg.

Roffe, a former Olympic skier who resides in Camp Hill, Pa. is the keynote speaker for this year’s Health & Wellness University. Last year Capital BlueCross began hosting the Health & Wellness University during the summer, in lieu of the annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day traditionally held in the spring. The focus is on healthy living, healthy eating, and having fun.

Roffe, currently an ambassador for the United States Olympic Committee, is scheduled to talk with the children at 9 a.m., preceded by a welcome at 8:30 a.m. from Capital BlueCross President & CEO Gary D. St. Hilaire. Other highlights include a presentation by local wildlife expert Jack Hubley at 11 a.m., and an appearance by comic strip artist and writer John Gallagher at 12:30 p.m.

From 9:30-11 .a.m. the children will participate in a number of healthy activities, including yoga, zumba, martial arts, a wrestling clinic, baseball with the Harrisburg Senators, and soccer with the Harrisburg City Islanders. The kids, ages 8-15 years old, will also have the opportunity to create their own healthy yogurt snack during a break. All kids ages 13-15 will serve as camp counselors, assisting the younger children during the physical activities.

“We had such positive feedback from parents and their children about last year’s program, that we decided to continue with this format for 2012,” said St. Hilaire. “By hosting this program in the summer, the kids don’t have to worry about missing part of a school day, and parents find it to be easier logistically. This all adds up to a better experience for the kids as they learn about how their parents work to keep the community healthier for everyone.”
