Capital BlueCross to Help Consumers Affected by Affordable Care Act-Related Policy Cancellations
Insurance Department authorizes extension of certain plans
HARRISBURG, Pa. (Nov. 26, 2013) – After receiving guidance from the Pennsylvania Insurance Department, Capital BlueCross today announced an initiative to help consumers whose health insurance policies were canceled due to non-compliance with provisions of the Affordable Care Act.
“Through all the change and current challenges in the health insurance market, we are committed to helping individuals enroll in plans that meet their needs and comply with the law,” said Capital BlueCross President and CEO Gary D. St. Hilaire. “The initiative we are putting in place, in consultation with the Insurance Department, is particularly important for people with low income whose policies have been adversely impacted by the new health care law.
“We understand that, for some individuals, this is an especially unsettling time. Our customer service representatives and licensed agents are available to explain all the options, alleviate uncertainty, and help customers choose plans that will provide protection and peace of mind.”
Capital BlueCross customers with Special Care insurance policies will be offered an extension of their current coverage at no rate increase for the three-month period effective January 1 through March 31, 2014. Customers who accept this extension will
have that additional time to shop for and enroll in a plan that complies with the Affordable Care Act. Customers will soon receive information by mail explaining this extension offer.
Capital BlueCross also will be mailing information to customers with other individual policies that have been cancelled to help ensure they are aware of all the channels available to them to obtain coverage for 2014 that complies with the law. Many of these customers will be eligible for financial assistance through the federal Health Insurance Marketplace.
