Capital BlueCross hosts day of fun, health education for children of employees

Former Philadelphia Eagles player Ron Johnson to talk about the importance of staying active
HARRISBURG, Pa. (Aug. 5, 2013) – Stay active is the key message to be shared with more than 115 children whose parents work at Capital BlueCross, during a special program from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 6 at the company’s headquarters building on Elmerton Ave. in Harrisburg, Pa.

Former Philadelphia Eagles player and Shippensburg University standout Ron Johnson is this year’s keynote speaker at the Capital BlueCross Health and Wellness University for children. Johnson runs Ron’s Rising Stars youth football camp in Pennsylvania, teaching children how to succeed on the field and in the classroom.

A couple of years ago Capital BlueCross began hosting the Health and Wellness University during the summer, in lieu of the annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day traditionally held in the spring. The focus is on healthy living, healthy eating, being active, and having fun. This new format has been extremely popular with employees and their children.

“My daughter has really enjoyed attending the Health and Wellness University and participating in all the fun activities while learning about proper exercise and nutrition,” said employee Marie Flickinger. “She now has a better understanding of Capital BlueCross’ goal to build a healthier community.”

Representatives and mascots from a number of local pro sports teams including the Harrisburg Stampede, Harrisburg City Islanders, Hershey Bears and Harrisburg Senators will be on hand to encourage and guide the kids as they participate in a number of physical activities. The day’s activities include hip hop dancing, martial arts, soccer, baseball, zumba, personal training and yoga.

Other highlights for the day include a presentation at 9 a.m. about the American Heart Association\NFL Play60 Challenge that encourages children to participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day for better health, and a reading of the book Healthy Habits by local author Floyd Stokes at 9:30 a.m.

The kids, ages 7-15, will also learn about healthy eating while a professional chef makes a trail mix snack for them during break time. All kids ages 13-15 will serve as camp counselors, assisting the younger children during the activities.
