Employees at Capital Blue store lead series of walks for better health
Community invited to stroll along during National Walk @ Lunch Day®
HARRISBURG, Pa. (April 22, 2013) – Employees at the Capital Blue store in Center Valley, Pa. are leading a series of four walks to better health during the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) National Walk @ Lunch Day on April 24.
Members of the community are invited to join one or all of the walks that kick off at 8:30 a.m., noon, 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. The one-mile walks will begin outside of the Capital Blue health and wellness retail store located at the Promenade Shops, and will follow along a walkway around the perimeter of the mall. Participants will receive a free pedometer to count their steps, a tracker to log total distance walked over time, and a water bottle to help stay hydrated.
“Walking is a simple exercise that most people can participate in, and the benefits are tremendous,” said Tom Peluso, director of Capital Blue. “We will all burn about 100 calories during each one-mile walk. I am excited to exercise alongside the community as we take these important first steps to better health together.”
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates the cost to treat illness and chronic disease caused by inactive lifestyles is nearly $1,000 for every family in America, every year. Simply getting 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as a brisk walk, at least fivetimes a week has significant health benefits, lowering the risk of developing or dying from cardiovascular disease, hypertension or type 2 diabetes, and improving the health of muscles, bones and joints.
This seventh annual walk, sponsored by the BCBSA, is part of a growing national workplace fitness effort developed in response to recent studies that show Americans do not have time during their day to exercise.

On May 2, Capital BlueCross is launching a corporate-wide exercise program called WalkingWorks®. Through this program, participating employees commit to walking at least 10,000 steps a day to better health over a period of 12 weeks. This will be the seventh year Capital BlueCross has participated in the WalkingWorks program.
