Health fair at Capital Blue store makes for great summer fun

All of the day’s activities, food are free to the public

HARRISBURG, Pa. (June 19, 2013) – Capital BlueCross is celebrating the official start to summer with a free health fair 11 a.m. -2 p.m. on Saturday, June 22 at its Capital Blue health and wellness retail store, located at the Promenade Shops in Center Valley, Pa.

“Saturday’s event is perfect for families looking to fill their staycation activities or for anyone who just wants to get a healthy start to the summer,” said Tom Peluso, director of Capital Blue. “There are plenty of fun activities for children and adults to enjoy inside the store, and outside in the sun. It is a great day to learn about getting fit, have a lot of fun and enjoy the sunshine.”

For children, the day’s activities will feature a bowl-a-thon in the store’s Kid Zone, face painting, organic bubble blowing, and crafts to build firefly containers, birdhouses and sun catchers. The children will also enjoy visiting with mascots from Hersheypark and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, and having their picture taken on a special summer postcard background. Parents can conveniently have their children’s ID digital photo taken and their fingerprints electronically scanned.

While the kids are playing, all adults can check out their health status with bone density, cholesterol, vision, skin and body mass index screenings. Or, they can simply relax by getting a massage or participate in a fitness demonstration. A number of health organizations will also be on hand providing information, including a representative from the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

After working up an appetite, everyone can sample healthy foods from the Rodale Café at Capital Blue, conveniently located right inside the store. The refreshing menu will include a variety of healthy salads, fruits, wraps and sandwiches. Guests can also enjoy a granita dessert, or a sorbet push pop snack. The chef at the Rodale Café at Capital Blue will offer a cooking demonstration for anyone interested in learning how to cook a healthier menu for their family.

Additionally, Prevention food director Lori Powell will conduct tastings of foods mentioned in the article “Backyard Barbecue Bash,” featured in July’s issue of the magazine. Attendees to the health fair will also receive Prevention’s healthy grilling secrets featured in June’s “Savor The Sizzle” article, and the first 100 food samplers will receive a free copy of the July issue of Prevention.

“We have three solid hours of non-stop activities, but it doesn’t end there,” said Peluso. “After the health fair is over, Capital Blue will host a book reading and signing by children’s author Floyd Stokes from 2-3 p.m. His book, Healthy Habits, will continue the day’s healthy theme.”
