Pennsylvania eHealth Initiative Elects Robert Torres of Capital BlueCross as its Chairman for 2013

HARRISBURG, Pa. (Feb 7, 2013) – Robert Torres, Capital BlueCross vice president of Health Information Technology, was elected by the Pennsylvania eHealth Initiative (PAeHI) as its board chairperson for 2013. As chairperson, Torres is an officer of the board, representing insurance organizations.

The Pennsylvania eHealth Initiative, a non-profit organization, works to improve the delivery of health care and outcomes in Pennsylvania by encouraging hospitals, medical professionals, health insurers and other health care providers to use electronic health records and other technologies to facilitate health information exchange.

"The adoption of electronic health records and the effective secure exchange of clinical information provides the opportunity to improve quality and safety of care, improve efficiency, reduce costs and make care more convenient for patients," said Torres. “As a member driven organization, PAeHI will continue to educate and work with health care providers, payers, government, businesses and consumers to support and advance health information exchange efforts in Pennsylvania.”

As chairperson of the PAeHI board, Torres will help PAeHI demonstrate the value of health information technology and health information exchange by highlighting best practices and innovation, promoting programs to better engage the consumers, and encouraging the use of health care analytics to improve health management and outcomes.

These efforts are consistent with Capital BlueCross' strategies to employ enhanced analytic capabilities to engage with and support providers through accountable care arrangements, as well as to interact directly with consumers.

Prior to joining the Capital BlueCross team, Torres was appointed by Gov. Tom Corbett to serve as Pennsylvania’s Health Information Technology Coordinator. In that position, he provided leadership to help promote health information technology and advance health information exchange strategies in Pennsylvania.
