Capital BlueCross, Harrisburg School District partner to teach 800 children proper dental hygiene

Students to perform their own rap songs about oral health

            HARRISBURG, Pa. (Oct. 28, 2013) – Capital BlueCross is partnering with Harrisburg School District to raise awareness of proper dental hygiene among 800 students in 5th through 8th grades at Camp Curtin Academy on Tuesday, Oct. 29. A series of three school assemblies, celebrating National Dental Hygiene Month, will be held at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 11:20 a.m.

The focus of the assemblies will be on making good food choices and how to take care of your teeth every day to maintain healthy teeth and gums. A highlight will be students performing their own original rap songs using dental terms such as plaque, cavity, hygiene and floss. The events will also feature interactive presentations by a Capital BlueCross registered dietitian and the school dental hygienist.

“The students are so excited about creating and performing their rap songs,” said Portia Slaughter, Camp Curtin Academy principal. “More importantly, with help from our friends at Capital BlueCross, the kids will learn why it is important to brush and floss daily, and to make the right food choices.”

“The earlier good healthy habits are formed, the better,” said Amanda Dolan, Capital BlueCross registered dietitian. “Children often don’t know the health differences between basic foods, like milk which can strengthen your teeth, for example, and juice which can eat away your enamel. Capital BlueCross is grateful for the opportunity to partner with Harrisburg School District to help students learn to maintain healthy teeth and gums for life.”
