Anthem Inc. Cyber-Attack Update

On January 29, 2015, Anthem, Inc. discovered that cyber attackers executed a sophisticated attack to gain unauthorized access to Anthem’s information technology system.

Since learning of the Anthem cyber-attack, Capital BlueCross has been working diligently to gather information about the attack on Anthem and how it might impact any of our members.

Capital BlueCross systems were not impacted by, and were not part of, the Anthem breach. Capital BlueCross and Anthem Inc. are separate and distinct companies.

However, findings from Anthem’s investigation into the attack have identified current and/or former Capital BlueCross members whose information was accessed. These include current or former members who received health care services in any of the areas that Anthem has served over the last 10 years. Anthem’s service area includes these states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

These members were affected because Capital BlueCross is one of 37 independent, locally operated companies across the United States that form the BlueCross BlueShield system. This affiliation enables BlueCross and BlueShield plan customers to get the high-quality, affordable health care they need wherever they are.

Anthem will formally notify all affected members by U.S. mail in the coming weeks.

Additionally, Anthem is offering all affected customers two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft repair services. To learn how to access these services, visit
