Capital BlueCross recognized with highest Fit-Friendly
Worksite honor by American Heart Association

Employee health and well-being integral to company’s success

HARRISBURG, Pa. (Aug. 27, 2015) – Capital BlueCross has been recognized by the American Heart Association as a Fit-Friendly Worksite at the Platinum level, the recognition program’s highest level, for helping its employees live healthier through physical activity and better nutrition. This is the fourth consecutive year that the association has named Capital BlueCross a Fit-Friendly Worksite.

“Helping people live healthier is what Capital BlueCross is all about, and we lead by example when it comes to our own employees,” said Kieran Hull, vice president, Human Resources and chair of the company’s Employee Wellness Committee. “We are committed to fostering a workplace that encourages and supports healthy living, and being named a Platinum-level Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association is a welcome affirmation of our leadership in worksite wellness."

Capital BlueCross was first named a Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association in 2012, earning Gold-level recognition. The company received the Platinum-level designation in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Also last year, the association recognized Capital BlueCross with a Worksite Innovation Award for the company’s practice of incorporating community charitable giving into its walking program incentives.             

Capital BlueCross is continually implementing new ways to help employees achieve and maintain wellness with innovative programming, incentives, and activity tracking tools. For example, with employee input, Capital BlueCross recently upgraded its onsite cafeteria and vending machines, introducing healthier food and beverage options including a selection of entrees under 550 calories. An informational campaign, including the posting of nutritional information in vending areas, also encourages Capital BlueCross employees to eat better.

Earlier this year, Capital BlueCross also piloted with employees a new Anti-Cancer Lifestyle Program. Evidence shows that a healthy diet, adequate physical activity, lowered exposure to toxins, social support, and stress management all help maximize the body's natural defenses to fight cancer. Participants gained information, tools, and support to sustain desirable lifestyle changes.

The American Heart Association Fit-Friendly Worksite program is a catalyst for positive change in the American workforce by helping worksites make their employees’ health and well-being a priority. Platinum-level employers:

  • Offer employees physical activity options in the workplace;
  • Increase healthy eating options at the worksite;
  • Promote a wellness culture in the workplace;
  • Implement at least nine criteria outlined by the American Heart Association in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and culture; and
  • Demonstrate measurable outcomes related to workplace wellness.

Today, America’s employers are losing an estimated $225.8 billion a year because of health care expenses and health-related losses in productivity, and those numbers are rising. Many American adults spend most of their waking hours at sedentary jobs. Lack of regular physical activity raises the risk of medical problems such as obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Employers face $12.7 billion in annual medical expenses due to obesity alone.
