teach children the importance of good oral hygiene

Hillside Healthy Habits Fair supports National Children’s Dental Health Month

HARRISBURG, Pa. (Feb. 25, 2015) -- Capital BlueCross is partnering with West Shore School District to hold a healthy habits fair from 9-11:15 a.m. on Feb. 26 at Hillside Elementary School in New Cumberland, Pa. The event is in support of National Children’s Dental Health Month and will teach more than 300 children in first, second, and third grade the importance of keeping their teeth and gums clean and healthy for a lifetime.

“We are excited to partner with Capital BlueCross for a healthy habits fair at Hillside Elementary School,” said Deb Barr, West Shore School District's certified school dental hygienist. “We appreciate the opportunity to highlight not only the importance of good dental health habits, but the opportunity to teach the benefits of other healthy habits, such as the correlation between good nutrition and a healthy smile.”

Amanda Dolan, a registered dietitian at Capital BlueCross, said “The earlier good eating habits are formed, the better. Children often don’t know the health impacts of basic foods, like milk which can strengthen your teeth, for example, and juice which can lead to cavities and in some cases eat away your enamel. Partnering with West Shore School District is a great opportunity to teach children about the role nutrition plays in their dental health.”

A highlight of the event will be a visit by local children’s author Floyd Stokes, who will read his popular book Say Ahh! The Teeth Book.

The event will also feature interactive displays where the students will learn about proper brushing and flossing, and how eating right can have a positive impact on dental health, as well as a person’s overall health.

A member of the Capital BlueCross Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) department will provide enrollment information that students can take home to their parents. For those who are eligible by meeting the income guidelines, CHIP provides coverage that includes dental and medically necessary orthodontic services.
