Former Philadelphia Eagle to visit children of
Capital BlueCross employees to inspire healthy living

“Health and Wellness University” event also to feature anti-bullying speaker and Gamut Theatre program highlighting health benefits of performing arts

HARRISBURG, Pa. (Aug. 10, 2015) – Professional athletes, including former Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Ron Johnson, will visit with children of Capital BlueCross employees on Aug. 11 during the company’s annual “Health and Wellness University” event to inspire them to be healthy in mind, body and spirit. Johnson will be joined by players from the Harrisburg City Islanders. More than 100 children will participate in the event, which will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Capital BlueCross’ headquarters in Susquehanna Township.

“My kids look forward to this event each summer,” said Capital BlueCross employee Mark McGaffin, whose three children have attended previous ‘Health and Wellness University’ events. “It’s a chance for them to see where I work, meet some of my colleagues, and participate in fun activities that teach them how to lead healthier lifestyles. Improving the health and well-being of our employees, our customers, and the community is core to our mission, and my kids always walk away from the day with a greater appreciation for the work we do at Capital BlueCross."

In addition to fun and healthy activities led by professional athletes, the program will feature two speakers.  Wrestler and mixed martial artist, Tim Boetsch, will talk about how there is no place for bullying in athletics or anywhere else. Boetsch has campaigned internationally against bullying. Ryan Matter, a professional trainer and bodybuilder, will talk about how sports and activities have had a positive impact on his career.

Children also will learn how the arts contribute to better health with a live performance of “Tales of Ancient Greece,” and an interactive improv workshop, led by Gamut Theatre Group. And Capital BlueCross’ health educators will present “Re-think Your Drink,” a session about sugar in certain drinks and the healthy alternatives that are available.

Capital BlueCross first hosted its” Health and Wellness University” a few summers ago in lieu of Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, which is traditionally held in the spring. The summer timeframe has proven extremely popular with employees because it avoids school conflicts.
