Best of all, for the improved service you receive, it costs you less.
Where to Go
Only in a true emergency is the Emergency Room the right choice. When you are sick or injured and unable to get in to see your primary care physician, the best, most cost-effective solution can be a retail clinic or urgent care center.
- Retail Clinic: Visit for convenient, routine care, such as for coughs and flu shots. Capital BlueCross recommends using a CVS MinuteClinic® for your non-emergency medical needs when you cannot see your physician.
- Urgent Care Center: No appointment needed. A good choice when you need minor medical care in a hurry, such as for mild asthma and minor allergic reactions. Walk-in centers provide immediate non-life threatening care, such as stitches, sprains and X-rays.
Get Answers Anytime - Questions about your health can come up at any time, day or night. That's why Capital BlueCross has Nurse Line, a trusted source for health information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. With Nurse Line, simply call 800-452-BLUE (2583) to speak to a registered nurse or access recorded health information on more than 1,100 health topics.
Be Aware - Understand your current health status and create a plan to improve your health. Get started by completing the Capital BlueCross Better Health Works® personal profile. Our Better Health Works programs begin with your comprehensive health analysis and offer you a wellness plan and support tailored to your own lifestyle and health needs.
Know Your Numbers - Obtain a bio metric screening. Knowing your basic bio metric numbers, like blood glucose and cholesterol levels, are powerful tools for early detection and can help prevent serious illness or disease.
Get Personal Care - Contact a care management nurse to help you with your chronic condition. Use this member service to keep your treatment on track, get professional advice and improve your health. You don't have to manage it alone when a dedicated nurse is here to help.
Search & Save - Quality, cost, and convenience are three factors you likely think about before making any important purchase. The Search & Save Center is your go-to resource to evaluate these factors when making health care decisions. Find a provider, compare treatment costs, and estimate out-of-pocket costs.
*HMO Members - Except in a true emergency, you should first call your primary care physician (PCP) to determine appropriate medical care. In most circumstances, you will not be directed to an emergency room. If you are unable to obtain a PCP referral in advance of receipt of the urgent care services, you should notify your PCP by the next business day.
