Qualifying Events

If any of the following events apply, you may be eligible to enroll or make a change to your plan outside of an Open Enrollment Period. Capital BlueCross requires supporting documentation regarding qualifying life events. See required documentation for Special Enrollment Period.

If none of these events apply, you will be able to enroll when the next Open Enrollment Period begins.

Loss of Minimum Essential
Coverage Event*

  • Legal Separation/Divorce
  • Loss of employer covered insurance due to reduction in hours, termination of employment, death of employee, or employer stops offering coverage
  • Child loses dependent status
  • Loss of HMO coverage due to no longer residing in the service area
  • Exhaustion of COBRA coverage
  • Coverage/policy expired outside of the Open Enrollment Period

*A loss of coverage due to nonpayment of premiums, fraud, or misrepresentation shall not be a triggering event unless it was committed by employer.

Gaining or Becoming a
Dependent Event

  • Marriage
  • Birth or Adoption of a child

Geographic Event

  • Permanent move out of our service area

Federally Facilitated
Marketplace Event

  • Change in government cost-sharing/tax credit status (APTC)
