The coronavirus outbreak, officially known as coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19, has gripped the media and sparked intense concern among scientists and public health officials in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirm that the public health threat is high. This is because, like the flu, COVID-19 can spread from person-to-person, causing severe illness and death. But unlike the flu, there is no vaccine.
COVID-19 is another kind of respiratory illness. According to Capital BlueCross Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jennifer Chambers, the best way to prevent respiratory illness of any kind is to avoid exposure. “Influenza [the flu] is still the biggest worry on the home front,” she says. “If you’re really sick, then stay home. If you can work from home, work from home. Don’t infect the people around you.”
This tip, plus those issued by the CDC, can help protect you from any illness.
